Version: @(#)README.cyg 1.2 06/08/98 This is a very rough port of ispell4.0 to the Cygwin system for Windows NT. This binary requires Cygwin, which is available from http://www.cygnus.com/misc/gnu-win32 The only purpose of this port is to allow spell checking from within the Tycho editor under NT with the ispell -u option. If you are looking for a complete ispell4.0 for windows, try http://www.itribe.net/virtunix/files/ispell-4.0-nt.zip The reason that we are not using that version is because under NT, the -u option causes a core dump. There is some confusion about the ispell version numbers. These sources come from ispell-4.0, which is sometimes called gispell. This version of ispell is obsolete and has been replaced by ispell-3.1.20. However ispell-3.1.20 does not have a -u option, which provides backward compatibility with the Unix spell command. Installation ------------ To run ispell -u, copy ispell.exe and ispell.dict to a directory in your path. Origins ------- These sources came from ftp://bbs.ami.com.au/pub/os2/editor/ISPELL40.ZIP See README.os2 for information about the OS2 port I made minor modifications to get this code to compile under Cygwin b19 under NT4.0. To recompile: 1. start up bash 2. cd to the src directory 3. type 'configure' 4. type 'make' Christopher Hylands, Ptolemy Project Manager University of California cxh@eecs.berkeley.edu US Mail: 558 Cory Hall #1770 ph: (510)643-9841 fax:(510)642-2739 Berkeley, CA 94720-1770 home: (510)526-4010 (if busy -4068) (Office: 493 Cory)
