100 Years of Solitude, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
I was just blown away by this book (I assume there's only one translation -- the cover shown by Amazon is different to the one I read). At first I couldn't get into it -- too mystical and magical for me -- but after a few chapters I couldn't put it down. Fabulous ending, breath-taking irony and tragedy, much, much better than my ability to describe it.

I later read Love in the Time of Cholera and didn't like it half as much.

Starship Troopers, by Robert A. Heinlein
;Noticed this in the 1997 best-sellers on amazon.com, and since it got such good reader reviews I decided to buy it and see if it helped me get over how bad the movie was...

Unfortunately, the book was worse than the movie. What a stinker! 1 out of 10.
